When the health of your hair has been compromised it takes time and dedication to get it to its healthiest state. Over-processing caused by colour/bleach and heat damage causes the hair shaft to become dense and porous, when the hair gets to this stage it can not be completely fixed. But with the right plan of action, home care routine and patience we can get your hair looking thick, healthy and luscious again.
Your hair grows at an average of half an inch a month, when the hair is very damaged we recommend regular 4-6 week cuts removing this ½ inch over the course of a few appointments. In a few months, although your hair hasn’t grown any longer it will be at a healthy starting point. As we’ve said before “what’s the point in having long hair that’s broken and wispy?”
Stay away from any home colours, let’s be honest there’s probably a good chance this is a huge factor in the current health of your hair. Especially if you have been lightening your hair at home, processing the colour too long and overlapping causes the hair structure to weaken. When having your hair done Teddy Grace hair and beauty salon, our highly trained stylists will ensure the colour is on for an adequate time and no over lapping causing unnecessary damage.
The next step would be looking at the products you are currently using at home, you need good quality professional products such as heat protectors and serums. For damaged hair, I will always recommend Olaplex number 6 Bond repair for all hair types. Although this product may be seen as an investment product, you will only need the tiniest amount on the mid-lengths and ends. You will notice your hair will immediately feel softer and smoother, over time the effects of this product will be even more noticeable.
Invest in a fantastic shampoo and conditioner, again you will use far less than the supermarket bought ones and they are kinder to your hair. You want to go for sulphate and paraben-free professional shampoo & conditioners (I have previously written a blog about the difference good quality products make)
Weekly treatments are a must for damaged locks, your hair will be thirsty its needs moisture in order for it to repair. We recommend having the occasional Olaplex treatment in the salon and buying yourself the number 3 or another at-home protein/moisture treatment.
Use less heat where possible, although I have always looked after my hair I have noticed a huge difference in the health and texture since the first lockdown. Previously I would style my hair with heat daily, whereas now I tend to wear it up more or in a french braid and use a lot less heat. As a result, my hair has grown thick, shiny and is the healthiest it has ever been.
There’s no doubt, healthy hair is in! And it’s here to stay, unfortunately, there is no overnight solution. But with regular cuts, treatments and good quality products you will get to your hair goals.
