As hairdressers, we feel very strongly about this topic. We always recommend professional hair products to our clients, because let’s face it… Happy hair = Happy hairdresser!
It matters to us that your hair is looking healthy and gorgeous, not only when you leave the salon but right through to your next appointment. I always tell my clients that what they do at home hair care-wise is just as important as what we do in the salon.
Ditch the supermarket shampoo and conditioner
So let’s dive into one of the UK’s leading supermarket shampoo and conditioner brands… Herbal essence.
The first ingredient is water (You’re probably thinking, great I’m always being told to drink more!) whilst water isn’t going to damage your hair, the second, third, and fourth ingredients are where it goes downhill.
Following on from water, the next ingredient is Sodium Laureth Sulfate. This is one of the ingredients that will give you the bubbles and suds, because of the degreasing power it’s also used in cleaning products (eek I know!). It has been known to dry out the hair and can cause an itchy, red scalp. It may be good at removing the oil and dirt, but it’s also leaving build-up on the hair shaft. Over time this build-up will cause your hair to lack protein, a vital vitamin to prevent breakage. Take away protein, you are left with brittle hair that snaps and splits easily (Welcome.. frizz!)
Sodium Lauryl sulfate, another ingredient known for its foamy suds. It may strip away too much moisture leaving you with dry hair, it can also compromise the follicles. Clients with coloured hair really should be steering clear of this ingredient. It will fade your hair colour rapidly, taking away the vibrancy and salon shine.
Joico Ingredients – Our favourite shampoo’s and conditioners that we also sell at Teddy Grace hair and beauty salon in Gosport.
Joico’s shampoo and conditioners boast ingredients such as Sea kelp which promotes stronger hair and a healthier scalp (already worlds apart from the supermarket right?) Sea kelp will add moisture and hydrate your thirsty locks.
Jojoba Oil is another ingredient that is rich in vitamins & minerals, giving your hair an extra nourishing boost. Jojoba oil is also used to thicken and prevent hair loss.
Summary
Because of the high-quality ingredients and concentrated formula of professional hair products, you will find you need to use far less with each wash than you would that of the supermarket-bought shampoos and conditioners. So whilst you will spend a little extra for each bottle, it will last a lot longer.
If you’re worried about the extra expense, ask the other half or friend to come into the salon to buy you Joico shampoo and conditioner for Christmas. (How it is only 7 weeks away)
At Teddy Grace hair and beauty salon, we care that your hair looks the best it can.
